Late in 2007, in a piece titled Energy: The Cycle Marches On, we outlined why, despite having been overweight the sector
over the prior five years and realizing significant gains, we still believed energy would be an important driver of
relative and absolute performance in our clients’ portfolios. That very much turned out to be the case in the first
half of 2008, with energy being one of the strongest sectors in the market and in our clients’ portfolios.

Our clients’ portfolios have been overweight Energy for the past five years relative to the Russell 1000 Growth.  We continue to believe the Energy sector will be a significant source of returns in the years ahead and as such continue to maintain overweight positions relative to our benchmarks due to expectations of strong earnings growth.
